Fire and personal safety

fire is our oldest enemy. We can never drop our guard against it. Modern society has found many ways to control it, but the threat is always there.

Hazard can be reduced dramatically by the correct choice of building materials, especially for your doors and windows. They can act as a barrier against heat and flames, yet must also work effectively as a means of escape.

PVC products have a valuable role to play, since they have a fire performance at least as good as other natural or synthetic materials. The chlorine content of PVC-u imparts an inherent resistance to fire. PVC-u products are tough, durable, and play a number of roles in personal protection and safety.

PVC-u is difficult to ignite, and even when it is burning the heat released (responsible for most of the damage in fires) is less than that of many other burning materials. When PVC-u products are involved in a fire the gases produced, including hydrogen chloride, do not contribute a special risk to the integrity of the building and insurance companies regard PVC-u as equivalent to other materials.

Independent fire tests on PVC-u flooring have shown that the heat released is at least half that of linoleum, while PVC-u also has much lower flame spread characteristics. PVC-u window frames have been found to remain almost intact in house fires, while wooden window frames were burnt out.
