Analysis of capital and maintenance costs by a large housing association in the UK showed that the total cost for softwood windows was a third more than those for PVC windows over a thirty year period.

A similar study in Germany showed that hardwood windows were 23% more expensive than PVC-u windows over a 25-year life. Aluminium window systems were 57% more expensive.

At least 20 years of useful life with minimum maintenance is possible with PVC-u building products such as gutters, window frames, shutters and cladding.
